Holu Hou Energy Secures Construction Financing for Koa'e Multi-Family Workforce Housing Project
Bankability Demonstrated for Renewable Energy Project at First of its Kind
Renewable Energy Project at Hawaii Affordable Housing Complex
Honolulu, HI – (September 9, 2020) – Holu Hou Energy LLC (HHE), a provider of design to service
renewable energy solutions for the Residential, Multi-Family Residential and Commercial building
markets, has secured construction financing for deployment of PV, energy storage and smart water
heaters across the 134 unit Koa’e Workforce Housing complex in Koloa, Kauai. The project is the
first of its kind in Hawaii. The unique capabilities of Holu Hou Energy enabled entry into this new
market, where solar generation and energy storage could be effectively deployed for individual
units at a multi-family property.
The project is valued at approximately $3.33 million, with financing covering an estimated 80% of
the project cost in materials and labor. HHE anticipates deploying 135 sets of HHE Power
Electronics, 897kWh (usable) of HHE energy storage batteries, and 530kW of PV generation.
Deployment has begun and is targeted for completion at the end of 2020, when the buyer is
scheduled to take possession and to own the project for a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement
The HHE system begins with a state-of-the-art modular power electronics platform that can
accommodate a larger number of solar and battery inputs than are available from other suppliers.
This system is designed to maximize safety, whether placed indoors or outdoors, including
batteries that perform much better and safer at elevated temperatures due to their chemistry and
materials. Monitoring and control of the energy assets will be through the HHE proprietary Smart
Control Center (SCC) that utilizes a Modular Energy Controller combined with a Cloud Computing
Platform developed by HHE.
There are more than 19,000 units of affordable housing without the benefit of renewable energy in
Hawaii today. According to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, there will be a need for another 25,000
units of additional affordable housing in Hawaii in the coming years. The Koa’e project will be a
very important reference for this market.
